Essentials for the Busy Mind consistently chooses books I’m really excited to read. Even when I’ve read a book before, the experience reveals how little I had actually put into practice. The discussions, structure, and community truly help me turn useful ideas into meaningful change.

Co-authors, and more importantly, father and daughter.

Nir Eyal is the bestselling author of Hooked, Indistractable, and Beyond Belief, with over a million copies in print in more than thirty languages. He's spent two decades turning behavioral science into tools people can actually use, and he taught the subject at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Many members expense Essentials through a work learning or development budget. If you’d like to, here’s a note you can adapt and send your manager. Personalize it for your role and organization.

Hi [Manager Name],

I’d like to put a membership to Essentials for the Busy Mind on our professional-development budget. It’s a monthly program that turns the best ideas from business and nonfiction books into changes I actually apply at work.

Each month, Essentials focuses on one carefully selected book and gives members a structured way to put its most useful ideas into practice. The membership includes:

  • Four live implementation labs, co-hosted by former Stanford lecturer and behavior-change specialist Nir Eyal
  • Practical exercises and personal playbooks that turn concepts into specific actions
  • Small breakout groups where members can work through real challenges with other professionals
  • Weekly commitments that create accountability for using what we learn
  • Guest conversations with authors and experts when available
  • Recordings of the live sessions for anything I’m unable to attend

What appeals to me is that the program is designed around implementation. Instead of reading a business book, taking a few notes, and forgetting most of it a few weeks later, I’d have a structured process for deciding what is relevant to my work, trying it, and evaluating results.

Here’s how it would pay off for [Company Name]:

  • Apply evidence-based ideas to current challenges in areas such as productivity, communication, decision-making, leadership, behavior change, and collaboration
  • Bring useful frameworks and practices back to my team
  • Develop specific professional skills over time rather than relying on one-off courses or events
  • Turn professional-development spending into concrete experiments and changes in how I work

I’d point what I learn at [specific priority, project, or skill].

If helpful, I’m also happy to share useful frameworks or takeaways with the team as I go.

Would you be comfortable approving this as a professional-development expense?

Thanks,
[Name]

Questions?

What if I can't make a session live? +
Life happens. Join live whenever you can, and if you miss one, every session is recorded and shared, including at least one breakout group, so you can always catch up.
Do I have to buy the books? +
Yes, members bring their own copy, but you’re welcome to read in whatever format works best for you: print, ebook, or audiobook. We’re here to help you think through the ideas, discuss them with others, and put them into practice.
How much reading is expected? +
About fifteen minutes a day or one book a month. Over a year, that adds up to nearly 100 hours with books worth your attention, without making reading feel like another obligation.
Who is this for? +
Maybe you start books but don’t finish them. Maybe your reading time keeps getting crowded out by everything else. Or maybe you finish plenty of books, but rarely take the time to directly use what you read. Essentials for the Busy Mind is for readers who want an engaged community, thoughtful conversation, and practical tactics to help them implement what they’re learning.
Will the group feel too large? +
We intentionally limit seats so the group stays thoughtful and engaged. You’ll also be placed in a small breakout circle for a more personal conversation, combining the energy of a larger room with the closeness of a smaller one.
What are the Terms of Service? +

Terms of Service

By enrolling in this program (“the Program”), you agree to these terms.

  1. What you’re buying. The Program is a paid membership: a guided reading and discussion group with recurring live online sessions, plus related materials. Sessions may be recorded. The Program is a subscription, not a one-time purchase.
  2. Billing and renewal. The Program is billed in advance according to the plan you select. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period using your payment method on file, at the then-current rate, until you cancel. By enrolling, you authorize these recurring charges.
  3. No refunds. All payments are final and non-refundable, including partial billing periods, missed sessions, and unused time. We do not provide refunds, credits, or pro-rated returns for any reason except where a refund is required by applicable law. You acknowledge that access and materials are delivered immediately upon enrollment, that you are requesting immediate access, and that to the extent permitted by law you waive any statutory right of withdrawal or cancellation once access has begun.
  4. Cancellation. You may cancel at any time by managing your subscription through Stripe, using the link in your payment receipt. Cancellation stops future charges; it does not refund charges already made. Your access continues through the end of the billing period you have already paid for, after which it ends.
  5. Access and delivery. We will provide reasonable access to live sessions and materials for the duration of your paid membership. Live sessions depend on third-party tools and on your own equipment and internet connection. Occasional schedule changes, session reschedules, or substitutions may occur. We are not responsible for access failures caused by your hardware, software, or connection.
  6. Guest authors. Some months include a live conversation with the book’s author. Author appearances depend entirely on the author’s availability and may be scheduled, rescheduled, or canceled at any time. We do not promise an author session in any given month, and membership pricing does not depend on one. When an author does join, time limits mean we may not get to every question, and we do not guarantee that every member will be able to ask one. If an author session changes or does not happen, clauses 3 and 4 (refunds and cancellation) still apply as written.
  7. Conduct. This is a small group built on good-faith participation. We may suspend or remove any member for harassment, abusive behavior, sharing other members’ private information, or disruptive conduct, without refund. Recordings, materials, and member discussions are for your personal use only and may not be reproduced, resold, or shared outside the group.
  8. Intellectual property. All Program content, including session recordings, written materials, and discussion guides, is owned by us or our licensors and is provided for your personal, non-commercial use. You receive no ownership rights and no license to redistribute.
  9. Recordings, likeness, and commercial use. Sessions may be recorded. By participating with your camera or microphone on, or by contributing in chat or discussion, you consent to being recorded and you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license to use those recordings, including your name, voice, image, likeness, and contributions, for any purpose connected to the Program. This includes commercial use as part of the product itself, such as sharing recordings with current and future members, and use in marketing, promotion, and the sale of the Program and related offerings, without further notice, approval, or compensation to you. If you prefer not to be recorded, keep your camera and microphone off and do not post in shared chats; you can still attend and benefit from sessions. We handle your personal information in line with our privacy practices and applicable law.
  10. Communications and consent. By enrolling, you agree to receive transactional emails necessary to run the Program, including session links, schedule updates, receipts, and billing notices. These are part of the service and are not marketing. Separately, you may choose to opt in to marketing emails about future programs and writing. Marketing emails require your explicit consent at sign-up, are never bundled with these terms, and you can withdraw consent or unsubscribe at any time without affecting your membership.
  11. No professional advice. The Program is educational. It does not provide medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a licensed professional. You are responsible for your own decisions.
  12. Disclaimers and liability. The Program is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from the Program is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.
  13. Changes to these terms. We may update these terms. Material changes will take effect for billing periods beginning after we post the update. Your continued participation after a change means you accept the revised terms.
  14. Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of Singapore, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the courts of Singapore.
